Consistent Quality in a Changing Climate: An Interview with François Smits and Marco Bom

16 October 2024

Climate change is increasingly affecting the agricultural sector. In this interview, François Smits, Sales Manager in Food Industry at Ardo, and Marco Bom, Agronomy Manager at Ardo Netherlands, discuss the challenges climate change brings and how Ardo continues to ensure quality and sustainability.

What challenges does climate change bring to agriculture, and how does Ardo handle them?

Marco:
“The biggest challenge is the unpredictability of the weather. At Ardo, we focus strongly on sustainability, and healthy soil is key. Without it, we cannot manage extreme weather conditions, from severe droughts to heavy rainfall. That's why we rely on scientific advice to manage water more efficiently. Additionally, our sustainability programme MIMOSA+ (Minimum Impact Maximum Output Sustainable Agriculture) plays a significant role in promoting healthier soils.”

Are Ardo’s customers also noticing the impact of climate change?

François:
“Absolutely. Customers are increasingly aware of climate challenges and expect Ardo to provide solutions. The issue we face is the divergence between demand and supply: the demand for plant-based products is rising, but yields are declining due to climate change. It's important to have open discussions with our customers about these challenges and find solutions together.”

Why is the interaction between agro and sales so important at Ardo?

François:
“Our agro team holds extensive knowledge about our products. By working closely with them, our sales team stays informed and up-to-date, which is essential to provide customers with the right information and quality.”

Marco:
“It’s crucial for us to know what customers are asking for. This helps us meet their needs as efficiently as possible. For instance, we continuously look for ways to optimise factory usage and apply our agronomic knowledge. If something doesn’t go as planned during one season, we make adjustments for the next.”

How does the cooperation between agro and sales benefit customers?

Marco:
“We recently held a 'Let’s Meet in the Field' event in Zundert, Netherlands. We brought together customers, sales colleagues, and agronomists to inform them about Ardo’s sustainability programmes in agriculture. We’re focusing on future-proof crops and incorporating regenerative farming practices. It was a valuable day for all attendees.”

How does Ardo ensure quality despite climate challenges?

Marco:
“Quality is non-negotiable. Despite climate challenges, we never compromise on quality. Our agronomists are in the field daily, taking samples before the products go to the factory. Quality is our focus, and that sets us apart from others.”

What role do long-term relationships play in Ardo’s sustainability efforts?

François:
“Long-term relationships are key. They help us plan and respond better to customer needs, which is essential for both sales and agronomy. This ensures we deliver the right products in the right volumes.”

What message do you have for the future?

François:
“Despite all the challenges, quality remains our priority. We continue to invest in sustainable solutions and long-term relationships with our customers.”

Marco:
“Exactly. We are committed to sustainable farming practices and improving soil quality daily. This keeps us future-proof, allowing us to consistently provide high-quality products to our customers.”
