Agro report May 2025
Positive news from the fields: finally rain in the North and sun in the South.
Vegetables in the North
After two dry months, the rainfall came back just in time with quite optimal growing temperatures. The rainfall at the end of May should transform the potential of the crops into good yields and good quality in the coming weeks.
Nevertheless, we still need to consider the extremely dry growing conditions we had in the last months.
The sowing of the peas finished earlier than ever in good conditions. In the meantime, pea harvesting started in all regions, and first yields look promising.
The spring spinach production is looking good as well in all regions.
Green beans have been sown in good conditions.
With these weather conditions in May, the other crops (carrots, onions, intensive crops...) started growing well.
Vegetables in the South
The weather finally also changed in the South. After a cold and wet spring, heat and drought finally appeared around end of May.
The extremely wet winter and spring conditions provided lower pea yields in Alpiarça (PT), and some late frost and hail impacted the pea production in Benimodo (ES).
The first plantations of the summer crops (peppers, cherry tomato, eggplants...) look promising. The last plantations happened a bit later than expected, but in good conditions.
Water reserves are quite full after the wet winter.
Herbs
The winter herbs (Parsley and Coriander) were good in Brittany.
The perennial crops look quite good as well in The Provence and in the UK (Oregano, Mint), even if we are missing some volume of thyme.
The first cut of chives was great in Brittany.
In The Provence, we already harvested the dill that was drilled early after the winter.
The harvest of spring parsley will start in June. Nice quality is expected.
What’s next?
June is again quite dry & warm, with even some heat waves coming up. As we’re still in the early stages for many crops, it’s difficult to predict how the crops will evolve and what the outcome will be.
We’ll keep you updated in the next Ardo Agro Update in July.
