Market & Harvest Reports: Summer 2024
After several extremely wet months, June finally brought some relief to the northern regions. Although the weather remained slightly cooler and less sunny than usual, precipitation levels were around average. Fortunately, the last week of June saw a shift toward warmer and sunnier conditions, continuing into July.
Northern Regions: Spinach & Beans
In the northern areas, this seasonal shift may lead to a concentrated harvest period this summer, with multiple products potentially needing to be harvested at the same time—similar to last year. Spinach, for instance, faced challenging spring weather, resulting in decreased production across Belgium, France, Austria, and the Netherlands. However, the spring sowing outlook in Flanders is positive and may offset some of the losses.
Around our factory in Geer (Belgium), all fields were drilled in April, but yields remain below average. To compensate, additional acreage has been allocated for summer spinach, which is expected to be ready for processing by the end of July.
Bean cultivation was similarly impacted by the wet, cold spring, leading to cancelled fields and significant delays. As a result, sowing has been extended until mid-July in parts of France and Flanders.
Carrots, Peas & Southern Regions
Carrot harvesting is also delayed, with limited volumes expected from August to October. The pea harvest kicked off with mixed results—early peas in Zundert (Netherlands) and northern France were affected by excess water, leading to low yields. However, current growing conditions in Flanders are more favourable.
In the southern regions, June brought higher-than-average rainfall, accompanied by occasional storms and hail. Despite fluctuating temperatures, summer crops are showing promise. The pea harvest in Saint-Sever (France) ended with lower-than-expected yields, while in Benimodo (Spain), the season delivered strong ratios and quality.
Broccoli, Peppers & Herbs
Spring broccoli in Portugal and Spain saw a successful harvest with consistent yields and good quality. The green pepper harvest in both countries has been slightly delayed, though fields are showing strong ripening and development. Some hail damage occurred in Badajoz (Spain), but the overall outlook remains positive.
Herb harvests have been pushed back due to persistent rain, but field conditions are looking promising as summer progresses.
Outlook for Summer
After a turbulent spring, summer weather is gradually stabilising across the northern and southern regions. We remain optimistic about the upcoming harvests, though careful planning will be required to navigate the concentrated periods for various crops.
This season's challenges highlight the importance of adaptability in agriculture, as we continue to work closely with our farming partners to ensure a steady supply of quality products.
